Poltergeist is a four-piece death metal band based out of New Delhi, India.
Very low tuned guitars, blast beats, various tempo changes, odd time signatures, heavy shredding on both guitars and bass, deep guttural vocals and non-stop massive rhythm sections make the band one of its kind.
Lyrically, Poltergeist is one of the most brutal and controversial bands in the country. Songs like Boiled In Blood, Strangled With A Wire, Prison Of Torture, and Sexual Gore seem to be testing the limits of lyrical and artistic freedom especially in a traditional country like India.
Being one of the most fierce and dreaded of its kind (demons), it seemed like the perfect name for the band. The band relates to the demon on the basis of being one of the most extreme sub-genres of metal, the name truly reflects the kind of disturbance and raging aggression that has to be conveyed through music.
But at the end, it is all about artistic freedom and the songs are small horror stories in the form of music.
Formed in December 2011 by two friends, Dhruv Vohra and Stanley Steven Toppo, both fans of Cannibal Corpse, their neighbour and friend, Kanishk Raj, joined the band and brought in his college friend, Ayan Basu, on rhythm guitar. In the meantime, the band auditioned several different bassists. In 2012, Sudhanshu Shekhar became the permanent bassist of the band.
The band got serious attention when they played their first show exactly after a year in 2012 in Cafe Morrison, New Delhi.
Unfortunately, in early 2013 drummer, Stanley, and guitarist, Ayan, left the band due to personal reasons. This is when Utkarsh Shrivastava joined the band who has been working with Sudhanshu on some other projects. It was then they decided to remain a four-piece band. In early 2014, vocalist, Dhruv Vohra, quit the band for musical differences and was replaced by Abhijeet Sanyal (Ex-Mutiny In March).
