Sarwar Hussain is a professional Sarangi player based out of Kolkata, West Bengal. He is one of the most accomplished musicians of the younger generation of Sarangi exponents in India. Born in 1981, at Gohad district in Gwalior, his musical heritage comes from a long line of Sarangi exponents. The sixth generation of his family, Sarwar was taught by his grandfather, Late Padmashri Ut Abdul Latif Kha Sahab, and his father, Ut Anwar Hussain, at the age of six. The super ‘taleem’ which he acquired from Padmashree Ustad Abdul Latif Khan for eleven years is clearly reflected in his virtuosic playing style. His playing embodies the intricate delicacy of his grandfather’s style as well as rare and impressive techniques. Sarwar is the only Sarangi exponent of this generation, who has the confidence of playing the complicated and confusing ‘tappa’ style, which he inherited from his grandfather. He has performed all over the country in all prestigious conferences like Tansen Samaroh, NCPA (Mumbai), Saptak Music Festival (Ahmedabad), and Sawai Gandharv Samaroh. Sarwar has performed in countries like Korea, USA, France, and many others countries. Carrying forward with his accomplishments, Sarwar is an A grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan. He has received many awards for his outstanding performance in the field of Hindustani instrumental – Sarangi of which some of these include Laxmi Bala Sammaan of AIR Bhopal and the title of Surmani in 1990 and Ustad Bismillah Khan Award by Sangeet Nata Academy in 2008. Sarwar is also a faculty member of ITC Sangeet Research Academy. Some of his solo performances in India include NCPA Sarangi Seminar (Mumbai), Swarna Concert (Delhi), Ustad Allauddin Khan Music Concert (Maihar), Tansen Concert (Gwalior), Chakradhar Festival (Raigarh), Vasant Rao Deshpande Music Concert (Nagpur), Spic Macay (Andhra Pradesh), and Khajuraho Festival (Khajuraho). Sarwar represented India abroad at South Korea (1997), USA (2001 and 2002), and was invited by UNESCO to perform in Paris and New York (2007). Sarwar accompanied many artists during his extensive tour of India as well as abroad. Some of these include Ustad Rashid Khan, Pandit Ajay Chakravarti, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Pandit Rajan Sajan Mishra, Pandit LK Pandit, Pandit Chhannu Lal Mishra, and Pandit Ullhaas Kashalkar.
