Biography
Anubrata Chatterjee is a professional percussionist based out of the capital city of West Bengal, Kolkata. He is the son of Pt Anindo Chatterjee, a world-renowned tabla player. Anubrata Chatterjee was nurtured to be a tabla player from a very tender age. He had the rare luck of being the youngest and the last 'Ganda-Bandh' disciple of Padmabhushan - Deshkottam Jnan Prakash Ghosh, the great guru, in 1992. Subsequently, Anubrata continued his training under the gifted expertise of his father. He debuted with the legendary Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia as an accompanying artist and since then, has gone on successfully to accompany living legends of Indian classical music such as Ustaad Rais Khan, Ustaad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustaad Shahid Parvez, TH Vikku Vinayakram, Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma, and many other respected musicians around the world. Anubrata has proved himself both as an accompanist and a soloist by his perfect tabla renditions. He has also given many famous duet concerts along with his father. Internationally, he marked his debut with a solo performance at the BBC World Radio, UK, in 1991. Since then, he has performed in major countries like USA, Jordan, Greece, Egypt, Israel, Germany, Croatia, France, Switzerland, Scotland, West Indies, Indonesia, Seychelles, Malaysia, Qatar, Oman, Singapore, Bangladesh, UAE, Japan, etc. In the past, Anubrata has been invited to perform at some of the most prestigious festivals held around the world like The Kennedy Centre Of Performing Arts (Washington DC), NABC (Houston), The Carnagie Hall (Pittsburgh), World Percussion Festival (Chicago), The Esplanade Theatres (Singapore), Corfu Festival (Greece), The Jerash Festival (Jordan), Dubrovnik Festival (Croatia), Namaste India Festival (Japan), Reit Burg Museum (Zurich), etc. Taking after his father, Anubrata gives great value to presenting quality training to his students. He holds workshops in New York at the Anindo Chatterjee School of Tabla regularly. He has also conducted numerous workshops in Japan in the past, making many students undertake advanced training under him. While being deeply rooted in the classical style of playing, Anubrata also recognises the need for his art to be contemporary. He actively collaborates on projects that are traditional yet new age in nature and strikes a chord with the youth. Based on this thought, he formed a unique percussion group called Taal-India wherein every region of the country was represented by a percussion instrument. He has also been a part of several fusion bands like String-Struck, etc. and has had the opportunity to share the stage with prominent artists such as Ranjit Barot, Shankar Mahadevan, Rahim Al Haj (a renowned Oud player from Iraq), etc. Currently, Anubrata is associated with Classicool, an innovative musical movement, as the lead percussionist. This also involves leading musicians such as Sh Rakesh Chaurasia, Sh Purbayan Chatterjee, Gino Banks, etc. Awards: President’s Gold Medal awarded by All India Radio, 2001 Pandit Nikhil Ghosh Memorial Award, 2002 Vasava Raj Rajguru Award conferred by Karnataka Government, 2013
