Biography

Vasudeo Kamath is a professional painter based out of the finance capital of India, Mumbai. Born at Karkala, a small town in Karnataka, and brought up in Mumbai, his inclination for drawing right from his early childhood became apparent to the people around him. Scribbling began much before he could write alphabets. He used to draw vertical and horizontals lines to represent trains running on tracks on the floors and walls of his house with a piece of chalk or crayon. These left-hand doodlings were the first expressions of the artist within him. His parents and school teachers noticed those sketches and their appreciation encouraged that inherent desire to pursue art as his career. After schooling, he took admission in the most prestigious institute, Sir JJ School of Art, in Mumbai. The institute provided him with the platform to prove his talents. Rewards and awards followed his dedicated efforts. The shining milestone was the GD Arts with the First Class-First Distinction. Since then, he has been relentlessly painting and sketching with all dedication and devotion. This has built up his creativity on solid foundation rooted in the perfection of drawing. He prefers painting in oils on canvases and watercolour on handmade papers, but he also enjoys painting with acrylics and soft pastels. Ever since his educational days, he loves painting landscapes on location and portraits from life. He also creates conceptual paintings based on his ideas of what he firmly believes in and what he always stands by. In addition to the subjective paintings, he tries to bring out the historical and mythological subjects with realistic depiction and detailed study of that era. He paints commissioned portraits as also the portraits of the people around. The most prestigious of these is his portrait of the First Lady, Smt Pratibha Patil, The President of India. His mastery in portraits has won many honours, the most acclaimed one is the Draper Grand Award bestowed upon by The Portrait Society of America for his Portrait, and ‘My Wife’ in 2006. He is also honoured to be the invited artist to demonstrate at the annual event of Portrait Society of America. His profound knowledge and his experience as an artist get portrayed in articles, which have been regularly published in Indian as well as international journals and art magazines to inspire and guide the aspiring artists. Besides this in spite of his busy schedule, he personally spares time for artists who seek his guidance.
