Biography

Urmila Sathyanarayanan is a professional dancer based out of the capital city of Tamil Nadu, Chennai. She has received rave reviews for the perfection and joy of her dance and her attractive stage presence. Urmila is praised for her crisp footwork, spontaneity and the vivaciousness in her facial expressions, her graceful poses and her deep aramandi (hallmark of this dance style). She has choreographed, conceptualized and presented over a dozen of original thematic productions, which have received critical acclaim. Urmila started her training under Late Guru KN Dandayudapani Pillai and then under Guru KJ Sarasa. She has been doing shows professionally for the last two decades. Urmila performs regularly at festivals nationwide and has toured overseas in Europe, North America, Middle East, Australia, Asia, and South Africa. Urmila has bagged several prestigious awards, such as: Nritya Choodamani Award 2001 Indian Fine Arts Society’s Best Dancer Award 1992 National Eminence Award 2003 Best Natyacharya Award, Indian Fine Arts Society 2009 Natya Kalasikhamani Award 2010 Urmila also runs Natya Sankalpaa, a dance school in Chennai which is known for its high standards.
