Sushmita Dev is an Indian lawyer and politician who was appointed as a member of the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal on 4 October 2021. In 2014, she was elected to the Lok Sabha from Silchar in Assam in the general elections on a ticket of the Indian National Congress.Sushmita Dev belongs to the Sylhet district of Bangladesh. Sushmita Devs father, Santosh Mohan Dev, was a senior Congress leader from Sylhet, Bengal. Her mother, Bithika Dev, was a legislator of Silchar of Assam assembly.In 2009, Sushmita Dev was appointed as the chairperson of Silchar Municipal Board, Assam. She served in this position till 2014. From 2011 to 2014, she served as a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly. In 2014, Sushmita Dev was elected as the Member of Parliament from the Silchar constituency and held the position till 2019 on the ticket of the Indian National Congress. Sushmita Dev was appointed as a member of the Committee on Empowerment of Women, a member of the Standing Committee on Science & Technology, and Environment & Forests in September 2014. In May 2016, Sushmita Dev was appointed as a member of the Joint Committee on the Enforcement of Security Interest and Recovery of Debts Laws and Miscellaneous Provision (Amendment) Bill.On 9 September 2017, Sushmita Dev was elected as the president of the All India Mahila Congress, and she held this position till 16 August 2021. On 5 April 2018, Sushmita Dev was appointed as a member of The Central Advisory Committee for the National Cadet Corps. In 2019, she lost the Lok Sabha elections to a BJP candidate, Dr Rajdeep Roy. She lost the elections by a margin of 81596 votes. In 2021, Sushmita Dev joined the All India Trinamool Congress and became a member of the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal.In September 2021, Sushmita Dev joined the All India Trinamool Congress instead of the Bharatiya Janta Party when most of the Indian National Congress leaders were inclined to the BJP. In a media conversation, she was asked what attracted her the most to join the TMC. Sushmita Dev said, I was attracted to the TMC and to Mamata Banerjees leadership because of her recent assembly election victory against the Modi Shah-led BJP in West Bengal, in spite of them using money power, misusing the Election Commission of India, the central forces, the central agencies it has made a huge national impact. She said, The Standing Committee will be looking at the age barrier for women for marriage. I am the only female member in the Standing Committee which would be looking into it, but I will try my best to ensure that the Chairman of the Committee listens to every voice across the board. Sushmita Dev further added that it was a sensitive matter, and she further assured that every petitioner would be heard.
