In 2014, she was elected to the Lok Sabha from Silchar in Assam in the general elections on a ticket of the Indian National Congress.Sushmita Dev belongs to the Sylhet district of Bangladesh. Sushmita Devs father, Santosh Mohan Dev, was a senior Congress leader from Sylhet, Bengal. Her mother, Bithika Dev, was a legislator of Silchar of Assam assembly.In 2009, Sushmita Dev was appointed as the chairperson of Silchar Municipal Board, Assam. She served in this position till 2014. From 2011 to 2014, she served as a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly. In 2014, Sushmita Dev was elected as the Member of Parliament from the Silchar constituency and held the position till 2019 on the ticket of the Indian National Congress. Sushmita Dev was appointed as a member of the Committee on Empowerment of Women, a member of the Standing Committee on Science & Technology, and Environment & Forests in September 2014. In May 2016, Sushmita Dev was appointed as a member of the Joint Committee on the Enforcement of Security Interest and Recovery of Debts Laws and Miscellaneous Provision (Amendment) Bill.On 9 September 2017, Sushmita Dev was elected as the president of the All India Mahila Congress, and she held this position till 16 August 2021. On 5 April 2018, Sushmita Dev was appointed as a member of The Central Advisory Committee for the National Cadet Corps. In 2019, she lost the Lok Sabha elections to a BJP candidate, Dr Rajdeep Roy.
