Stated to be one of the most famous singers in Punjab, Surjit is considered to be the vital link between traditional Punjabi folk music and modern Punjabi pop
Surjit Bindrakhia is a professional singer based out of Moga, Punjab. He has had arguably one of the most influential voices among Bhangra singers during his time. Throaty, with a broad range of sounds, he was one of the most successful traditional artists doing the rounds of the bhangra scene during his day. Surjit had been known in Punjab for many years, but his big break in the market came with Dupatta Tera Sat Rang Da, 1995, his best track. Since then, many remixes in 1990's were composed of his older songs and new releases. Surjit is credited as being the first global superstar of bhangra music. His song, Dupatta Tera Sat Rang Da, held the record for being the #1 Punjabi song on the UK charts for weeks. Immensely popular in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s at the rural belt of Punjab, Bindrakhia has cut 32 solo audio cassettes during his decade-long career. Stated to be one of the most famous singers in Punjab, Surjit is considered to be the vital link between traditional Punjabi folk music and modern Punjabi pop. In 2011, Nirmal Sidhu and DJ Harvey composed a tribute song to Bindrakhia called Bindrakhia Boliyan; it has been a huge success since its release being ranked at #1 on the BBC Asian Network Chart in the first week of release.
