Sumithra is a singer born and brought up in New Delhi, India. She has been learning music for the last 12 years and is specialized in Hindustani Classical (Vocal) from the University of Delhi. She is also trained in western vocals for a while. Sumithra is the lead vocalist of 'World Folk Ensemble' (WFE) and the female vocalist of the Sufi-based band 'Samarpan'. Her versatility has given her the opportunity to experiment with songs of different genre. As the lead singer with WFE, Sumithra resolves to showcase beautiful folk compositions from all over the world and promote conservation of rich cultural heritage. Her collections include songs from countries like Croatia, Belgium, France, Bolivia and Sweden. Her intense love for music led her to perform as a guest vocalist with 'Avial' – an alternative Malayalam Rock band at Delhi’s Striker Club, Vasant Kunj. The passion led to another opportunity. This time a meeting and blessing from the living legend, Pandit Birju Maharaj. She joined his troupe as one of the lead singers and travelled across the country to sing some of his compositions. Sumithra is also associated with 'Delhi Dance Theatre' (DDT), an organization that curates Indian and Western dance, music, and film. She lent her voice for the LIVE music for 'Not Your Mothers' – a contemporary dance, Kathak, physical theater to explore the changing roles of women. Sumithra also has recently performed as guest singer for 'Susmit Sen Chronicles'. 'Khamosh Hain Kyun Teri Zubaan”, her promotional song for Aam Aadmi Party created a rage during the Delhi Elections 2013 December. The song instantly connected with millions of Indians and gathered massive appreciation nationwide.
