Biography

Soumya Shankar Roy is a freelancer percussionist and arranger based out of the capital city of West Bengal, Kolkata. He teaches and plays all kinds of rhythm instruments, especially the tabla and Srikhol. He is the founding member of SOUMYA, an organisation for performing arts. Soumya has studied Tabla under the guidance of Pt Shankar Ghosh, and has learned to play drums and Latin percussions from of Shri Manojit Dutta. He also received guidance from various artists worldwide. He has got his Masters in Music degree from Rabindra Bharati University, and is also a Sangeet Visharad from the Chandigarh University. He has performed all over India and represented the nation at various music festivals abroad: Germany (Indian Music And Film Festival) Poland (Goa Dupa & Kala Chakra) Portugal (Boom) Spain (Barcelona Music Festival) Mauritius (Folk Music Festival) …and many more. He has shared the stage with exponents like AR Rahman, V Balsara, and many others. He has played with different reputed bands of Kolkata and overseas, like Shuffle Demons, Kayos Theory, Sam Smala, No Jazz, Ed Degenaro, Alvin Atkinson, Kay Brothers, etc. He has also performed in various music festivals (classical, jazz and fusion) like Calcutta Jazz Festival, Fusion Fiesta, NH7 Kolkata, Calcutta Pied Piper Festival, and Calcutta Rhythm Festival. He has also performed as a guest artist (percussions) in several electronic music festivals in India and abroad.
