Shushila Likmabam is a professional Indian judoka who is known for winning the silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics, and she is the only athlete representing judo from India.Shushila started her training at a judo academy by the age of 7. She used to train with her elder brother, Shilakshi Singh, and the brother-sister duo would wake up early in the morning for their judo practice. They both used to cover a 25-30 minute journey to reach the judo academy with Shushila sitting on the bicycle carrier.Shushila started her judo practice under the guidance of her uncle, Likmabam Dinit, an international judo player, and began participating in state and national level championships. She made her international debut with the Commonwealth Judo Championship in 2010 in Singapore. She participated under the 44 kg category and won a gold medal. Shushila Likmabam with other participants at the 2010 Commonwealth Judo Championship.In 2010, Shushila moved to Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala, to improve her training and learn better about sports. In 2019, Shushila won a silver medal at the Asian Open in Hong Kong.In 2019, when Shushila was competing in Grand Slam in Osaka, Japan, she didnt hear the announcement of her name. In an interview with The Indian Express, her brother said- The rule is theyll announce your name once and wait for 10 seconds. If you dont show up then its over and the opponent gets a walkover. But Shushila was alone and the announcements were in Japanese. She didnt realise they called her name. Woh bahar hi nahi nikle. Toh hum soche kya hua?.
