In 2012, while pregnant and vacationing in Cambodia, Shalini Saraswathi contracted a rare rickettsial infection that led to multiple organ failure and a coma. Doctors gave her just a 3% chance to survive, warning that her limbs might need to be amputated. By September 2013, she’d lost all four. Emerging from that devastating experience, Shalini faced deep grief, not only the loss of her baby and her body’s parts, but also her identity. Supported by loved ones and coach B.P. Aiyyappa, she began rebuilding, first learning to walk with prosthetics and later discovering a passion for running.Her breakthrough came at the TCS Bengaluru 10K: finishing in just over 2 hours in 2016, then improving dramatically to 1 hr 35 min in 2017. She earned the title Asia’s fastest woman on blades in the T62 category, claimed medals at the National Para Games, and represented India at the 2023 Asian Para Games, setting an Asian record. Beyond athletics, Shalini is a corporate leader and a commanding motivational speaker. She delivers keynote addresses at forums like THE WEEK’s Best Hospitals event (2024) and the India Inclusion Summit, emphasizing resilience, inclusion, and self-agency. Her journey, marked by humor, humility, and grit, turns personal tragedy into global inspiration.
