Biography

Saurav Ghosal is an Indian professional squash player. In April 2019, he attained the 10th world ranking in squash. In 2022, he competed in the Commonwealth Games organised in Birmingham and created history by winning Indias first ever singles bronze medal in Commonwealth Games. In childhood, he joined the Kolkata Racquet Club and began practising squash in his hometown.Soon after completing his school education, Saurav Ghosal shifted to Chennai from Kolkata and joined the ICL squash academy in Chennai where he began receiving squash training under Major (Rtd) Maniam and Cyrus Poncha. Later, Saurav Ghosal joined the Pontefract Squash Club in West Yorkshire and started training under the guidance of Malcolm Willstrop.In May 2002, Saurav Ghosal clinched the German Open (U-17) title, and in June 2002, he won the Dutch Open championships. A young Saurav Ghosal.In 2004, Saurav Ghosal won the Under-19 Squash title during the British Junior Open championships and became the first Indian squash player to win the same by defeating his opponent Adel El Said of Egypt in the final at Sheffield, England.In 2006, Saurav Ghosal defeated his opponent Gaurav Nandrajog at the National Championships organised in New Delhi and became a national squash champion.In 2006, Saurav Ghosal clinched a bronze medal at the Asian Games held in Doha. Upon winning this event, he was honoured with the Arjuna Award by the President of India in 2007. In 2010, his PSA world rank was 27. Saurav Ghosal in 2007.In 2013, Saurav Ghosal reached the Quarterfinals of the World Squash Championship in Manchester, England and became the first Indian to reach the same. Saurav Ghosal in 2013.In 2014, Saurav Ghosal bagged a silver medal in individual singles in the Asian Games organised at Incheon and became the first Indian to win a medal in Asian Games in this sport. During the finals, he was defeated by his opponent Abdullah Al-Muzayen of Kuwait.In 2015, Saurav Ghosal won the 35k PSA event in Kolkata.
