Ramkripa Ananthan with XUV 500.Ramkripa Ananthan completed her degree in mechanical engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. Later, she got her post-graduate degree in industrial design from IDC, IIT Bombay.After completing her education, she joined Mahindra and Mahindra in 1997 as an interior designer, where she was responsible for designing the interiors of Bolero, Scorpio, and Xylo. Later on, she was appointed as the head for the project Mahindra XUV 500.The new project was for the development of a premium SUV vehicle for the companys line-up and in the initial stages, the company conducted surveys among 1500 people from different countries asking them about their expectations from a potential SUV vehicle. Moreover, Kripa herself is an outgoing person who loves to travel and she has traveled from Manali to Srinagar on her Bajaj Avenger.Leading a team of 20 people, Ramkripa Ananthan has shown that women are capable of doing anything they wish for, and she proved this as she became the only women design chief in the world who was given the responsibility to design a car. The XUV 500 project was taken up by Mahindra and Mahindra in the year 2007, and the car design was inspired by a Cheetah. Ramkripa Ananthan talking about the design of cars.For the next four years, Kripa and her team kept making designs for XUV 500, which went through minor changes and tweaks before the final design was approved. Finally, the car was launched in the year 2011, and the bookings flooded the dealerships.After the huge success of XUV 500, Kripa and her team continued to add more cars to the alpha-numeric series as they designed TUV 300, KUV 100, and face-lift of XUV 500. Along with these SUVs, her team also designed the latest MPV for Mahindra, Marazzo. Design of XUV 300 by Ramkripa Ananthan.While other designs by them were successful, KUV 100 couldnt follow the steps of the elder siblings from the series and failed as a project as the dealerships didnt receive many bookings for the car.Ramkripa Ananthan always preferred working with a team of young and enthusiastic people so that the work environment is always uplifted and people can give better inputs. She started alone but after almost 10 years, she is working with a motivated team with 5 female designers, and Kirpa believes that everyone is special in their own way. She said:.Ramkripa Ananthan fell in love with cars ever since she started pursuing her post-graduation in design. She loves her job as she gets to visit auto shows and her favorite thing to do in London or Paris is to sit in a corner of a busy street and wait for the roar of a Lamborghini or some other sports car.
