Founded by Rukmini in 2009, Raadha Kalpa Dance Company is a classical Indian Bharatanatyam dance studio dedicated to the promotion of art and culture through artistic collaboration, performance, experimentation, and preservation of classical traditional ideals.
Raadha Kalpa Dance Company primarily uses Bharatanatyam and theatre as a performance media with the extensive use of Karanas, the ancient dance technique of India as prescribed by the Natyashastra. It is committed to maintaining the purity of the vocabulary of movement, as well as retaining the traditional context and content of the artistic medium. Rukmini’s unique approach to choreography utilises innovation within the classical context, creating work that is rooted in the classical and yet surprisingly refreshing because of variants in the stage, dynamics, lights and directional choices of movements.
Raadha Kalpa Dance Company primarily periodically produces commissioned dance productions. Many of the company’s productions have toured many cities all over the world and have been well-received by diverse audiences.
The Raadha Kalpa Dance Company functions with Rukmini Vijayakumar as the artistic director and choreographer. The dancers are from varying backgrounds. Some are students of Raadha Kalpa and others are professional dancers from different parts of India. The dancers currently working with Raadha Kalpa projects are Matangi Prasanna, Sneha Devanandan, Surabhi Bharadwaj, Preethi Bharadwaj, Indu Venu, Vanita MD, Nitya Narasimhan, Padmashree KS, and Bhavya Raviraj
