Biography

Niranjan Haldar is a professional veena player and guitarist based out of Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He plays four types of veena: Vichitra Veena, Saraswati Veena, Ranjan Veena, and Triveni Veena. The Ranjan Veena and Triveni Veena are his creations. He was born in the year 1955 in Kolkata to a music-loving family. He is the youngest child of Shri Dinabandhu and Smt Mahamaya. Music became a part and parcel of his life as both, profession and motto. Niranjan received training in Indian and Western music by guitar teachers – Kazi Aniruddha and Rajat Nandy. While in Indian classical music, he learnt from Pt Gokul Nag (veteran sitar player from the Bishunpur gharana) and completed his MA in Music in 1978. His first professional appearance was at AIR Kolkata as a Yuv Vani artist in 1972. Later, he achieved grades in Western music in 1980 and Indian Sugam Sangeet in 1981. Besides, he also passed with grade A in light music from AIR in 1989. Niranjan joined as a staff guitarist at AIR Indore in 1988. In Indore, he began playing Vichitra Veena and gave several performances for Akashvani, Doordarshan, and other important musical concerts at various places in India. He retired as an A-Grade artist from AIR Indore, after 25 years of service.
