His mothers family came from Pulwama.After Independence in 1947, his Family went to Lahore from Amritsar. His father followed the teachings of the Ahl al-Hadith.Nawaz Sharif is the owner of Ittefaq Group and Sharif group which are the conglomerate of many businesses incorporating steel, agriculture, transport and sugar mills.His brother Shahbaz Sharif is the incumbent Chief Minister of Punjab province, the most populous state in Pakistan.His daughter Maryam Nawaz also a politician and his second daughter Asma Nawaz, is married to Ali Dar, son of Ishaq Dar, the current finance minister of Pakistan.During his first tenure in early 1990s, Sharif took steps for intense government control of science in Pakistan and the projects needed his authorisation. In 1991, Sharif founded and authorised the Pakistan Antarctic Programme under the scientific directions of National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), with the Pakistan Navys Weapons Engineering Division, and first set up the Jinnah Antarctic Station and the Polar Research Cell.In 1992 Co-operatives societies scandal, Sharif lost support from the Punjab Province and Kashmir Province as well when the co-operatives societys scandal got wide-spread.After Pakistan made nuclear tests Sharif Maintained a remark  If Pakistan had wanted, she (Pakistan) would have conducted nuclear tests 1520 years ago. but the abject poverty of the people of the region dissuaded [Pakistan] from doing so.
