She was the youngest of three siblings but was the leader of the family.She was a bright student at her studies and for the same, she received a full scholarship from Harvard University.She started her career, producing documentaries on social issues in India.In 1979, she launched her first documentary film titled Jama Masjid Street, which was featured on the life of Muslims in Delhi.She made her debut as a film producer in 1988 with the box office hit movie, Salaam Bombay. The movie won 25 plus awards and nominated for Best Foreign Language Film award at Oscars.She does charity for street children in India through the Salaam Balak foundation which she founded after the success of her debut movie Salaam Bombay in 1988.She runs a film production house under the banner name of the Mirabai Films.She was the member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 1990 and Berlin International Film Festival in 2002.
