Mahalakshmi Iyer is a professional singer based out the finance capital of India, Mumbai. She is a playback singer, best known for her Tamil and Hindi songs. Apart from these, she can also sing in many other languages like Marathi, Telugu, Odia, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, and Assamese. Her singing career started with the 1999 movie Dus, which was Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s debut as music directors as well. Mahalaxmi also sang the track 'Ae Ajnabee' with Udit Narayan under the music direction of AR Rahman in Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se. Since then, she has sung in many serials, movies, and original albums. Some of the successful soundtracks she has been a part of are Yaadein, Saathiya, and Mission Kashmir, and worked with the biggest music directors like Vishal-Shekhar, Jatin-Lalit, AR Rahman, and Shankar-Ehsan-Loy. Some of the Yash Raj films where Mahalaxmi lent her voice are Bunty Aur Babli, Dhoom 2, Fanaa, and Salaam Namaste. Mahalaxmi is known for her performances in songs like Kabhi Sham Dhale (Sur - The Melody of Life, 2002), Har Taraf (Rishtey, 2002), Chup Chup Ke (Bunty Aur Babli, 2005), Bol Na Halke Halke (Jhoom Barabar Jhoom), and Aaj Ki Raat (Don- The Chase Begins Again, 2006). She also sang AR Rahman’s Jai Ho for the film Slumdog Millionaire, 2008. In this song, she sang the Urdu words between the short Jai Ho chants and portions of the verses. She has rendered her voice to many private album remixes like Aaja Piya Tohe Pyar and Baahon Mein Chali Aao, which was initially performed by the legendary Lata Mangeshkar. She provided the vocal background score to a very famous ghazal by Pankaj Udhas named Aur Ahistaa. Mahalakshmi has recorded hundreds of commercial advertisements on television.
