From the Lincoln Centre to the Zhongshan Music Hall and the Esplanade; from the Royal Albert Hall to the Kennedy Centre and Madison Square Garden, Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam has captivated audiences everywhere she has sung. Born in Delhi, she started learning Hindustani Classical vocals under Sri Balram Puri at a very young age. Her incredible talent was apparent by the age of eight when she won her first gold medal at a music competition. She also won gold medals both the years when she participated in the inter-ministry classical competition as an infant in New Delhi. Kavita started singing professionally on stage with veterans like Mukesh, Hemant Kumar and Manna Dey while she was in college. She began her recording career in 1971 and her first recording for a Bengali film song was a duet with Lata Mangeshkar. 'Maang Bharo Sajna' was her first Hindi film, in which she sang for Laxmikant–Pyarelal, and soon followed by the movie 'Pyar Jhukta Nahin'. Her interpretation and fantastic range have led to collaborations with the likes of OP Nayyar, Naushad, Laxmikant–Pyarelal, Khayyam and RD Burman, right up to AR Rahman, Shankar-Ehsan-Loy and Ismail Darbar. Following her wedding to Dr L. Subramaniam, Kavita has expanded her artistic range to areas which have never been explored before. She got to be the featured soloist in the Global Fusion album released by Warner Bros, featuring musicians from around the world. Kavita has also sung as the soloist with orchestras like the Leipzig Philharmonic, Beijing Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Radio Orchestra, Fairfax Symphony, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She has collaborated with Pop and Jazz artists, including Al Jarreau, Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Steven Seagal, and Larry Coryell. She has released albums of Indie-pop, ghazals, devotionals and also a classical jugalbandi album with Dr L. Subramaniam and Pandit Jasraj. She sang for Ramayana, an Indo-Japanese venture, and many popular television serials in various languages. Kavita has won several awards, including four Filmfares, Padma Shri, Zee Cine Award, Screen Award, Lata Mangeshkar Award, GIMA, IFFI Award, Kishore Kumar Award, and the 'Best Singer of the Millenium' award at the Stardust Millennium 2000 awards. Kavita Krishnamurti is that artist who has managed to prove herself in every musical field which she has chosen to enter, and has excited listeners from around the world with her stage performances, playback singing and recordings for the last 40 years.
