Biography
Kailash Kher is a renowned Bollywood playback and Sufi singer, and a television celebrity in India. He was born on 7 July 1973 in Meerut city, to a Kashmiri family. When he was young, Kailash moved to the capital city of India, New Delhi. His father was an amateur musician who used to perform traditional folk songs regularly at household events. Kailash had a natural talent in music from a tender age of four; he would often belt out songs with his premature yet powerful voice. When Kailash turned 14, he left home to search for a guru to achieve formal training in music. As he found one, began his years of classical and folk music study. Despite initial opposition from his family against choosing music as a profession, Kailash got through, and eventually moved to Mumbai in 2001, to become a professional singer. The initial years for Kher in Mumbai were full of struggles; he used to live in cheap residences and hotels. His first recording was of an advertising jingle for a diamond company, and he got paid with a handsome amount. Soon as he recorded a few more jingles, his raw, husky, soulful voice caught the attention of every music composer and production house in the film industry. His big break occurred with the song ‘Allah Ke Bande’, from the film ‘Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II’. The song got more famous than the movie, and Kailash Kher became a household name. By 2004, Kher gained enormous attention, appreciation and recognition nationwide, and till date he has sung over hundreds of songs for the industry; has sung in 14 languages in various regional films of India, and recorded more than 400 advertising jingles for the radio and television. Kailash Kher, along with his band Kailasa, released his debut album, ‘Kailasa’, in 2006, which resulted in the smashing hits – ‘Teri Deewani’ and ‘Tauba Tauba’. This was followed the band’s second album, ‘Jhoomo Re’, in 2007, which received critical and commercial acclaim. In 2007, Kailash took part in a concert tour – named The Incredibles – in Canada, US, and The Caribbean. The tour was a massive stage show that featured renowned Bollywood singers like Asha Bhonsle, Sonu NigamNigam and Kunal Ganjawala. In 2008, he was one of the judges on the Indian television’s singing reality show, Indian Idol. In the January 2008 edition of the GlobalFest at New York’s Webster Hall, Kailash made an unforgettable appearance and displayed his true artistry, electrifying the audience. The show made Kher a music star, globally. In 2009, Kailash Kher and the Kailasa band released their debut international album on the independent record label, Cumbancha. The album featured new songs, re-recorded versions of their most appealing songs, and acoustic versions of some massive hits.
