Guru Somasundaram is a popular Indian actor who predominantly works in Tamil and Malayalam cinema. He is best known for his performance in the films Aaranya Kaandam, Joker, Vanjagar Ulagam, and Jai Bhim..Guru Somasundaram was inclined towards acting and drama since childhood. In 2002, Guru joined a prominent Tamil theatre group Koothu-P-Pattarai to polish his acting skills. While performing in a theatre drama named Chandrahari in Koothupattarai, director Thiagarajan Kumararaja noticed his acting skills and offered him to work in one of his future films. In 2008, the director Thiagarajan called up Guru and provided him with the opportunity to play a lead role in his neo-noir film Aaranya Kaandam. Guru accepted the offer and later played the character of Kaalayan, a drunk man in the film. As a part of his preparations, Guru lost more than seven kilograms of weight, and also changed his hairstyle, moustache, walking styles, body language, and mannerisms to justify the personality of his character.Guru Somasundaram gained huge popularity with his debut film Aaranya Kaandam and received huge critical acclaim for his performance. One of the media houses praised Gurus performance by saying, The honours undoubtedly go to Guru Somasundaram. His gleeful cackles at the rooster fight, pathetic rumblings to his son and wide-eyed act in the Lodge are wonderful to behold..Next in 2013, Guru Somasundaram appeared onscreen as Kovil Kutty in the Mani Ratnam directed drama film Kadal. Although Guru had a very small role in the film, he left a great impact on the audience with his performance. In the same year, Guru left the Koothu-P-Pattarai theatre group and started working as a freelance theatre actor, in order to focus more on the Malayalam cinema. Next, he portrayed a photographer in 5 Sundarikal, a Malayalam romantic anthology film. Later he became part of various successful films including Pandiya Naadu, Jigarthanda, 49-O, Bench Talkies  The First Bench, Thoongaa Vanam, and Kohinoor. For his performance in the film Jigarthanda, Guru was nominated for a Vijay Award for the Best Supporting Actor in 2013. Guru showcased his acting skills by playing the character of Mannar Mannan opposite Ramya Pandian and Gayathri Krishnaa in Raju Murugan directed political film. The movie focuses on creating awareness about the necessity of toilets for all rural homes and the film won two awards at the 64th National Film Awards. Behindwoods also honoured Guru Somasundaram with a Gold Medal for being the Best Actor of 2017 for his performance in the film Joker.His phenomenal performance in the film Joker gained Guru Somasundaram huge recognition as a lead actor and he earned various opportunities to work with some great filmmakers. After the success of Joker, the trailers of two of his movies Idhu Vedhalam Sollum Kadhai and Vanjagar Ulagam also gained huge views on the internet. During a media interaction, when he was asked about how he manages to deliver completely different unique characters in each of his films, Guru said, I dont try different looks. In Koothu-P-Pattarai, I used to try different looks and check myself in the mirror. I think, perhaps my face and body structure are such, with less make-up and with minor changes, I am able to show the difference. This helps me in cinema. Thats all; there is no secret in it..In 2021, Guru Somasundaram was cast in the Indian Tamil-language legal drama film Jai Bhim. Jai Bhim is basically a slogan or greeting used by followers of the Indian scholar and social reformer Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. The film is based on a 1993 true incident that involved a legal case fought by Justice K. Chandru on behalf of Senggeni, a member of the Irular tribe community, seeking justice for her husband, Rajakannu, who went missing from the police station. Guru played the character of a Public Prosecutor, Chellapandiyan in the T. J. Gnanavel directed film opposite Suriya, Lijomol Jose, K. Manikandan, Rajisha Vijayan, Prakash Raj, Rao Ramesh, and many others. The 164-minute long film, released on 2 November 2021, got immensely popular in no time and has become the highest-rated movie on IMDb.
