Whether it is classical, film music or bhajan, she has a great presence in the music world; she is first artist from Kerala to get a B high grade from AIR
Whether it is ghazal, Hindustani classical, film music or bhajans, Gayatri Asokan is a forceful presence in Indian music world.
Born to Dr. Asokan and Dr. Suneethy, Gayatri has been singing since childhood. Her grandmother Ammukutty was a Carnatic music teacher.
Though born into an academic family, her parents encouraged her to learn Carnatic music from a very tender age.
She was trained in Carnatic music by Nedumangad Sasidharan Nair, Mangat Natesan, and Vamanan Namboodiri.
During her school days and college days, she won several competitions in light music and also western music. While she was doing her BA in literature, she developed a keen interest in Hindustani music due to her friend, late Philip Francis, who was a ghazal singer and tablist.
So, she decided to go to Poona and got trained under renowned Hindustani classical artist, Alka Marulkar.
Meanwhile, during one of her visits to her home, she got her first break in playback. The composer was none other than the legendary Ravindran Master. It was for the movie, Araynnangalude Veedu, a beautiful duet with Maestro KJ Yesudas.
Recently she has been experimenting with other genres like fusion music and 'jugalbandis' and has been widely appreciated in major platforms like the Nishagandhi festival. Gayatri has performed on stage with senior artists like KJ Yesudas, S Janaki, Hariharan, KS Chitra, SPB, Shankar Mahadevan, etc.
She has also done classical concerts in London, Europe, and the Middle East. She regularly appears on all Malayalam television channels.
