Gaurav Mazumdar is a professional sitar player based out of the capital city of India, New Delhi. One of the most sought-after and versatile musicians today, he hails from a family of well-known musicians of Allahabad. His early musical career began with vocal music followed by the violin, under the tutelage of Dulal Mazumdar, his father, and Guru Pt Nandkishore Vishwakarma.
The legendary maestro, Pt Ravi Shankar, saw Gaurav's talent and inspired him to learn the sitar, and under the legend's guidance and teaching, Gaurav has come to be an accomplished musician.
Gaurav's work and performances have been widely appreciated and acclaimed by audiences at various music festivals and venues all across the globe spanning several parts of Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe, and America, also performing on occasions with Pandit Ravi Shankar.
Gaurav is renowned for his solo recitals, sparked by passion, thorough knowledge of raag and taal and a keen sensitivity. His jugalbandis (duets) with some of the best-known artists of India from both the North-Indian (Hindustani) and South-Indian (Carnatic) cultures are a real treat for the listeners.
He has had numerous collaborations with western music composers such as Philip Glass, Daniel Hope and Kenny Werner, and composed for and performed with the English Chamber Orchestra. He has scored music for the ballet 'Siddhartha'– a book by Nobel laureate Hermann Hesse and a score titled 'Akanksha' for his concert at the Vatican to celebrate the new Millennium - being the first and only Indian musician to perform at the Vatican.
