Demonic Resurrection got started in March 2000, and ever since it has been surprising the world with it heart-thumping music. The band initiated as a group of young, 17-year old music freaks who were heading to get India introduced with extreme metal music, because back then this genre was hardly known and tried by musicians in India. After nine months of efforts and struggle, the band’s leader, Sahil ‘The Demonstealer’ Makhija, released ‘Demonstealer’, the band’s maiden album. The attempt was quite amateurish, but a bold one. This caused some cover bands to notice Demonic Resurrection, and their journey started to improve. There is a common problem of instability of members in bands, and the same happened in Demonic Resurrection. Therefore, the first stable line-up of the band came in 2001; Sahil took on vocals and guitars, Nikita Shah on vocals and keyboards, Count Varathora as bassist, and Yash Pathak as the drummer. In this line-up, Demonstealer was re-recorded by the band. Yet, the band was experimental with its music after a significant improvement in the recording. The style of music was still not very professional, but still managed to receive critical acclaim. A tape version of the album got out in the local market, released by Vampiria Records, a Brazilian record label. In 2002, the members got separated, and the band got dismantled. Demonstealer was left with nothing but to start from the square-one, again. Demonic Resurrection got functional again in 2003; this time with a new line-up that comprised Husain Bandukwala on bass guitar, Mephisto as keyboardist, JP hitting the drums, and the Demonstealer on vocals and guitars. The next two years were spent in penning down new stuff to signify a changed line-up. Every member of the band contributed his effort and creativity and to bring out diversity in their music. The gothic/black/death metal sound of Demonic Resurrection was now replaced with melody and brutal aggression, and then came their second album, A Darkness Descends in October 2005. The album received good-reviews and praises from India and abroad. Metal Observer, a popular webzine on metal music, gave a rating of 9 out of 10. The album, till date, has been a benchmark release for metal music fraternity of India. This remarkable album also led to the birth of a metal record label, Demonstealer Records that would record albums of other top metal bands of India. To add more dimension and depth to their style of music, the band added Pradeep Pande in 2006 as a lead guitarist, but JP (drums) left the band, the same year. However, the band still managed to get their third album recorded, which Beyond the Darkness was. The band also featured along with a Pakistani band Dusk and a Bangladeshi band Severe Dementia, on a split CD with title – Rise of the Eastern Blood. Demonstealer had to take on drums because JP had already left. The third album had an experimental touch of the band, adding ethereality to their sound. Although it was still skeptical of the band’s musical direction, the critics continued their praises and applause. The metal music of India was on the verge global recognition because of Demonic Resurrection. The band got featured in Global Metal, a documentary by Canadian filmmaker and musician Sam Dunn, and thus known as the only band from India that got a chance in Global Metal, with international bands like Lamb of God, In Flames, and Sepultura. In its hunt for a new drummer, Demonic Resurrection found one in August 2007 – Virendra ‘Viru’ Kaith. The band continued to make tours and write songs till the next year, and eventually Pradeep left in 2008. The 18-year-old guitar-ace Daniel Rego replaced Pradeep. It was in 2009 that Demonic Resurrection widened their scope and started touring all over India. The band also featured for Opeth as a supporting group in February 2009 and also for Textures and Amon Amarth in December 2009. Demonic Resurrection entered the studios again in 2009, only to record its full-length third album. The album was the final chapter of its Darkness trilogy – The Return to Darkness. Famous artist Michael ‘Xaay’ Lorac was invited to design the album’s artwork. Subsequently, the band’s first video – ‘The Unrelenting Surge of Vengeance’ got out and has been getting massive airplay from popular music TV channels like VH1, ever since. The band made an official release of this album in January 2010, and did a nationwide tour titled as The Resurrection Festival. By 2010, Demonic Resurrection had completed its 10 successful years in metal music, and thus did their first foreign show in Norway, at the famous Inferno Festival, in April 2010. It was followed by another one at the Brutal Assault Festival in August 2010, held in Czech Republic. In June 2010, the band bagged the Metal Hammer Golden God Award for Global Metal. From beginning to present, the story of Demonic Resurrection has been full of struggle, criticisms, praises, rejection and acceptance. Yet, what remained constant is its dedication and persistence. Demonstealer concluded with the fact that “the journey is only a beginning.” Achievements: Metal Hammer Golden God Award Rolling Stone Metal Award for Best Album; Best Song (Popular Choice) JD Rock Award for Band of the Year (Popular Choice) Current Line-up: Demonstealer – Vocals & Guitar Mephisto – Keyboards Nishith Hedge – Lead Guitar Ashwin Shriyan – Bass Guitar Viru – Drums
