She is a member of Indian National Congress and represents Raiganj constituency of West Bengal in the current Lok Sabha.She started her career as an actress and has performed on stage since 1984.She has also been a television artist, costume designer and art director for television serials and short films.In 1996, she married Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, an Indian National Congress politician 15 years her senior who was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1971.
