Square One is a LIVE band duo started by Soham Mallick and Soaham Mandal. Soham Mallick is trained in Hindustani Classical Western music. He had been associated with a number of projects as a vocalist, composer and arranger, and is the Western vocals teacher at Lancers International School, Gurgaon. Influences worth mentioning are John Mayer, Guns n’ Roses, Aerosmith, Switchfoot, and Shafqat Amanat Ali. Soaham Mandal is inspired from Vinnie Colaiuta, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Virgil Donati, Gavin Harrison, Dennis Chambers, Rodney Holmes, Ranjit Barot, Jojo Mayer, Thomas Lang, Larnell Lewis, Chander Sardjoe, Mike Portnoy, John Bonham, Jeff Campitelli, Benny Greb, Simon Phillip, Carter Beauford, Anandan Sivamani, and Gilad Dobrecki; "the list increases almost every month," he says. More than 10 years of drumming, four years of literature, a year and a half of research, and infinite sound tripping left him quite impaired to almost every other aspects of his life. It's their names that got them together. Soham – a frequent visitor in JNU – heard about the drummer guy who shares his name. Soaham, the virtuoso percussionist, heard about the singer-guitarist player who often visited his campus with some of his friends. It took them a while to jam – but once they did, the connection was immediate. Soon after, Soaham, who had been wanting to get into the music scene of Delhi after having rocked the music scenes of Kolkata and Hyderabad, became an integral part of all the projects Soham was associated with, which includes bands like You-Turn and The Straight Outs. Square One is their own little project where the raw nature of their musical sensibilities is preserved.
