Nikhil Nair is a professional bassist based out Mumbai. He started his musical journey in the year 2010 after learning the guitar. It was during this period that he developed a curiosity for the low end brethren of guitar and to fuel his curiosity he switched to bass in the year 2011. From there he realized this was his calling and thus the bass became an integral part of his personality and identity. Apprenticing under Bijit Bora in the same year helped him grasp the nuances and techniques in music. Nikhil’s earlier musical influence ranged from pop punk to progressive metal.
He has often been helped and motivated by players like Biswajit Chakraborty, Rushad Mistry, Bijit Bora, Sonu Sangameshwaran and Crosby Fernandes. Nikhil’s bass playing style mainly revolves around pop punk and metal inspired riffs along with subtle melody lines. He believes that the bass has the power to invoke emotions within the listener and hence he is experimenting with his playing to make it as groovy and emotional as it could get. He strives to expand his bass playing and be as versatile as possible. His current musical approach revolves around jazz, funk, blues and soul. He is influenced by players across genres which include Rob Trujillo, Mike Dirnt, Duff McKagan, Pino Palladino, Rushad Mistry and others.
Over the past few years, Nikhil has worked with some very talented musicians in and around the independent music circuit. He is associated as an artist with Natural Streets for Performing Arts, an NGO which aims to reclaim public space on the lines of busking, thus promoting various genres of music. He is a guitar teacher with an experience of four years in teaching. He has been a part of Red FM’s Red Bandstand Project. He has performed at venues like Blue Frog. Has also opened for acts like Darshan Doshi Trio and Sceptre. His past collaborations includes an alternative metal band and a hard rock band which were quite active in the local scene.
