Around 2011, people started organizing different comedy open mic events in Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, and
Bangalore. All of this happened in association with a growth of a counterculture in Indian cities which catered to
the appetite of younger generations for live events for comedy, poetry, storytelling, and music. Various stand-up
events were covered by popular news channels such NDTV / Aajtak etc. and was appreciated by millions of viewers.
As a result of these developments and the increasing penetration of YouTube (along with Internet), Indian
standup comedy started reaching further masses. While the established comedians such as Papa CJ and Vir Das
were independently growing through various national and international performances, other comedians such Biswa
Kalyan Rath, Vipul Goyal, Kanan Gill, and Kenny Sebastian, grew popular through YouTube videos.
Although the industry is still in its infant stage, we see a lot more influx of aspiring comedians as they transform the ecosystem around us.
Some famous comedians from Bangalore are Kenneth Sebastian, Sundeep Rao, Shrirupa
Sengupta, Sneha Suhas, etc.
Let us know a bit more about them
Kenneth Sebastian started making films since the age of 15 and by
the age of 21, he had directed about 12 short films, edited two major Indian motion pictures 'STATION'
directed by Saad Khan and produced by Sumit Ghosh, and 'Joint Trip' directed by Siddhanth K.S.
He also released a self-produced acoustic blues album 'Balance' while maintaining his extremely good looks. He regularly performs at the Canvas Laugh Factory (Mumbai) and performs at the Comedy Store.
In Bangalore, he is actively involved with Bangalore's first and only comedy group 'The Polished Bottoms', which comprises Indias best comedians such as Sundeep Rao, Sanjay Manaktala, and Praveen Kumar to name a few, and possibly the best comedy group in this world.
Sundeep Rao is India's only blind comic actually partially blind who brings his comic foresight, which is rather clear in contrast to his sight. His first comedy special was 'Out of Sight' and was more than just a sixth sense. While Sundeep has been doing standup since 2010, it is only recently that he started talking about his disability in open. In an interview, he said that from being a comic who never spoke about his lack of sight on stage, he has now become a comic who talks only about it.
For her, making people laugh is the most important thing in
her life. She believes in entertaining people.
She was the winner of the Bangalore finals of the MICF Raw Heats. Her comedy involves observations, over thinking mundane realities and dealing with her parents.
She has performed in various corporate events, private parties, etc.
Shrirupa always makes sure her audiences laugh out loud!
The young and intelligent girl is a brilliant stand-up comedian and
a mimicry artist.
Even though she started working professionally for only a year, lots and lots of practice and efforts have helped her move forward in the world of comedy.
She has performed in places like the Canvas Club (Bangalore) and many other regular stage shows.
