Bollywood’s Juiciest Oldest Love Affairs

Bollywood is famous for story-telling. We see so many talented individuals creating believable characters in a fantasy world, similar and yet dissimilar to ours in many ways. But sometimes we see that stars tend to cross the line as co-workers and start to develop deep feelings for one another. This is when people grow curious and they try to pursue these stars and find out about their affairs. Some indulge in such acts because they want cheap publicity. Some are frustrated with their personal lives. Some find true love outside their marriage. Let’s explore the lives of some of the most famous stars in Bollywood.

Raj and Nargis

Raj Kapoor and Nargis had created a stir many years ago with their on and off screen romance. They worked in 16 films together. When Nargis met Raj, he was already married to Krishna the sister of actors, Rajendranath and Prem Nath.

He was a family man and had children. He could not leave them for Nargis. She was devastated and found solace in the arms of Sunil Dutt when they were shooting for Mother India.

Guru Dutt and Waheeda

Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman are another couple that stirred controversy in Bollywood. Guru Dutt was married to Geeta Dutt at that time. He was suffering from personal problems in his life and he was found dead in his apartment in 1964. The reason behind his death still remains a mystery. He was drunk the night before his death and had taken an overdose of sleeping pills. It was his third attempt to kill himself. Waheeda remains silent about the whole incident.

Dilip Kumar and Madhubala

Dilip Kumar and Madhubala were inseparable off-screen. Her father, Attaullah Khan, was a very domineering man. His intervention led to the split of this legendary couple. Madhubala was a very obedient daughter. She had various restrictions. She did not attend any public function or anything except shooting for a film. She was engaged to Dilip Kumar but her father was against the marriage. She had no choice but to succumb to her father’s unreasonable wishes.

Dev Anand and Suraiya

Dev Anand and Suraiya were a legendary couple in Bollywood. After her affair with this superstar, she remained unmarried for the rest of her life. She had a sweet romantic relationship with this star and called him ‘Devina’. Dev Anand called her ‘Suraiyana’. At one point of time, she was eager to give up her career in music for him. She did everything to be close to Dev Anand. Suraiya’s grandmother was responsible for their separation. Suraiya was ready to elope and marry Dev Anand but this information was conveyed to her grandmother by an assistant director while they were shooting for the film Jeet. Her grandmother kept an eye on her ever since that incident. She lacked the courage to go against her family and refused his hand in marriage.

Amitabh Bacchan and Rekha

Amitabh Bacchan and Rekha have been the most controversial couple in Bollywood. It is still one of the most talked about episodes in the history of Bollywood’s love affairs. They never proclaimed their love for each other publicly. But their love has been prominent and visible to their fans.

While they were working together on the film, Do Anjanee (1976), they were both married to their erstwhile spouses. Yet they secretly met at Rekha’s friend’s bunglow.

When a co-star was ill-treating Rekha on the sets of Ganga Ki Saugandh (1978), Amitabh overreacted to protect Rekha. Everyone came to know about the lovers. During the making of Silsila, things were even more prominent.

People started to say that they got married privately. She attended the wedding ceremony of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh wearing vermilion and a mangalsutra. Her dress was like that of a married woman, which created further gossip. She even boldly went to Amitabh and started speaking to him. Jaya, Amitabh’s wife, tried to control her emotions but was seen shedding tears. She was heartbroken when her husband openly confirmed his relationship with Rekha.

Jaya openly commented that she would not let her jeopardize her marriage. Rekha was accepting of the fact that Amitabh did not want to leave his family because he had children. She candidly professed that they loved each other, no matter what the circumstances. She married businessman Mukesh Aggarwal but lost him when he committed suicide on account of his mental illness.

These are some of the classic love stories of Bollywood that suffered in silence, had lovers torn apart by people and circumstances, but nevertheless, these tales will be etched in our memories as tales of true love.
